REPUBLICANS AHEAD.

MAINE ELECTION RETURNS. PORTLAND (Maine), Sept. 10. The Republicans are leading the Democrats in Maine by at least two to one in all the five major contests. The Republican' chairman (Mr Martin) says the Maine election returns definitely herald the end of the Roosevelt Administration, indicating the election of Mr Wendell ' Willkie .in November and a Republican majority in the House.

Maine is the only State "in the Union in which State elections are not' held in November ; they are held in September and are regarded by many as an indicator of bow the national poll will r.cuult. The 11cpublicans have generally controlled Maine since the early eighties, though in 1910 and 1912 the Democrats Avon. In 1932 the Democrats elected a Governor, Mr L. J. Brann, thus providing a good omen for the party’s national triumph two months later. Mr Roosevelt fauetl to carry Maine itself completely at that time, however. In the last national elections, in 1936, the Republicans captured three seats, including the governorship and the Federal Senatorship from tile Democrats in Maine, but tills did not prove an indication of bow the national voting would turn out, for the Democrats retained power.
