NEW NAZI DEMAND.
FOOD AND MATERIALS. „ NEW YORK, Sept. 10. The New York Times’s Washington correspondent says it is reliably stated that Germany has formally demanded that the Vichy Government ship to the Reich 58 per cent, of the food and raw materials of unoccupied France and similarly such products imported to France in the future. It is believed the new French Ambassador, who will endeavour to obtain food relief for France from the United States, will meet fresh obstacles due to this.
Dr. Joseph Stokes, junr., has returned from a six weeks’ tour of unoccupied France on behalf of the Quaker Relief Organisation. He said the Germans were doing nothing to help the inhabitants of the unoccupied zones, which were threatened with famine. “The Germans,” he said, “could permit food to enter, but the fact that they are removing food to Germany shows they need it themselves.”
At Washington the State Department is concerned as to whether the French forces at Martinque will regain possession of 130 American bombers aboard the aircraft-carrier Bearn. Diplomatic efforts to regain possession through America have failed. . ,
A Vichy message states that, at the request of Germany, the Government is terminating its diplomatic representation in the German-occupied countries.
