NORWEGIAN GOLD

SAVED BY CHILDREN. - Norwegian children saved 9,000,000 dollars’ worth (£2,250,000) of their country’s gold from falling into the hands of invading Germans, reports the Baltimore News Post, which announces that the gold reached Baltimore in the Norwegian steamer Bomina.

The newspaper relates that when the German offensive on the Western Front began, the. Bomma, a small steamer, moved into a remote liord, where it was covered with tree branches to escape detection- by German aeroplanes. For days afterwards children pulling sledges —a common sight in Norway-—trudged inconspicuously towards the vicinity of the steamer. On each sletlgc was a small box containing the gold, which was taken from a hiding place in the hills 35 miles from the fiord. Now and then a woman passed by the Nazi guard pulling a large sledge with the children sitting on the box of gold. Six weeks were required to transfer the gold from the hills to the ship.
