TWO HURDLE WINS. SMOKE SCREEN’S SUCCESS. (By “Spectator.'**) Smoke Screen returned to form at the Wa-iganui Club’s meeting, at Awapuni, achieving two wins as a hurdler alter previously having shown some promise in this department. Smoke Screen has u good record, but as a five-year-old lant season failed tto carry on with hie successes. It was revealed that he was guttering from ligamentary trouble, and he was spelled until last winter, when he was tried as a hurdler by F. McHugh, of Marton. On the fiat Smoke Screen’s main successes were in the Pacific Handicap (Ircnlhain). Great Northern Champagne Stakes and Manawatu I Sires’ Produce Stakes at two yearn; , the Great Northern Guineas, Iliccarton Handicap, and Hul t Handicap, and seconds in | the New Zealand Derby aficl Thompson Handicap, at three years; and, at four years, wins in the King’s Plate (Filers lie) and the Taranaki Stakes. In 30 starts he lias now had 13 wins, five ecconds and a third, and has won £3955 in stakes. Don Quex Rehandicapped.
After hie win in the Moutoa Handicap at Awapuni on Saturday Don Quex has been rehandicapped 61b, making 8.1 for the Swanoon Handicap at the Avondale meeting. Time in Guineas.
The pace was slow in the early stages of the Wanganui-Guineas, and as a result the time of 1.48 4-5 was the slowest since 1937, when Bunvan won in 1.49. and the second slowest time over recorded in the race since its inception in 1898, supplanting the Wanganui Derby. Third Guineas Win.
B. 11. Morris, rider of Sir Beau, in the Wanganui Guineas, had already twice ridden the winner of this race. Ho had the mounts on Damaris in 1927 and on Ilusoian Ballet in 1938. H. Gray rode four winners of this race, and l'\ Davie and L. G. Moiris were other horsemen to obtain three
Bad Barrier Position. Rakanui, aficr a meet convincing win on the first day, was made second favourite for the five furlongs hack 'sprint at the Wanganui Club’s meeting, lmt lie drew wide out at the barrier, and had no chance of getting up with the leaders. He finished a fair fifth. Oaks Candidate.
All Quiet, who is trained at Awapuni bv T. 1.. Wilson, is a candidate for the New Zealand Oaks ' and other classicevents. She won the second division of ihe maiden race at, Awapuni on luursday last and her future form will bo watched with interest. By Siegfried—Speechless, she is a si=,tcr to Brunhild-, who won the Oaks m 1937. Kilometre Unlucky.
Though nearly falling at the start. Kilometre appeared to be right out of the Moutoa Hack Handicap, and was in the rear of the field for about five furlongs. With half a mile to go he moved up handv to the leaders, and just failed to get up to beat Don Quex at the finishH : & performance gave the impression that with an ordinarily favourable start he would have won comfortably.
