STATE THEATRE. ‘THE RAINS CAME.” “The Rains Came,” the great Louis Bromlield novel, screens to-day at the Stato Theatre with Myrna Loy, Tyrone Lower and Gcorgo Brent starred at. tho head of a dazzling cast! All the fascinating characters of the book come to vivid life on tho screen and every rolo is perfectly cast and brilliantly played. Myrna Loy, looking more enchanting than ever, breaks with tho “perfect wile” tradition to play the amorous Lady Esketh and eho is superb. Tyrone Power is grand as the handsome, high-caste Hindu surgeon, Major llama Haiti, tho .first real love of Lady Esketh’s romance-strewn life; and George Brent gives a splendid account of himself as tho world-weary Tom llansomo. The colourful sotting of Brqmfieid’s mythical city of Itanchipur, India, is realistically reproduced and the awesome catastrophes that highlight the novel—tho earthquake, tho flood, tho fire and tho plague—are -all reproduced with breathtaking effect. Indeed, In the opinion of this .reviewer, there has never been anything in film history to match tho spectacle scenes in “The llains Caine.” The mail train is thundering through tho night and most of the passengers are asleep when suddenly there is a grinding of brakes —tho communication cord has been pulled. Tho guard of the train hastens along the corridors to find the cause ; lie comes to a first-class compartment. Oil the iloor is a beautiful young girl lying unconscious and the door open. 'J lie unravelling of tho motive behind this mysterious occurrence forms the enthralling plot of “Tho Spider,” the G-B-D action drama coming to the State Theatre. KOSY THEATRE. “CALL OF THE YUKON.” Love in the Arctic wasteland! A man and a woman . . . and two dogs. All four struggling against the elements of the frozen north, and against tho even stronger forces of natural instincts. Such is the compelling, thrilling story of Republic’s “Call of the Yukon,” adapted from James Oliver Curwood s popular novel “Swift Lightning,” which shows at the Kosy Theatre to-day. Jean Williams (Bcv r criy Roberts) has gone far into Northern Alaska for material for a novel which she is writing. The little Bskimo 'village where she is staying lias been plagued by a roving band of wolves, led by a . half-wolf, half-dog called Swift Lightning. Tho wolves have killed all wild litc, and the natives are forced to flee southward. Hugo (Lyle Talbot), a trader, tries to get Jean to leave with them, but she refuses. . Gaston Rogers (Richard Arlen) a half-civilised trapper, also stays. The only other living beings who remain are Firefly, a collie dog, who stays by the grave of his master, who has been killed; two bear cubs that Jean has adopted, and Winkey, her tame raven. “A Bride For Henry,” . which shows at the Kosy Theatre to-day, is excellent entertainment. Full of amusing situations i and crackling dialogue, this Monogram production is sure guarantee # for limitless laughs. The picture, which is an adaptation of the “Liberty Magazine” story by Joseph Bentham, co-slars Warren Hull and Anne Nagel. Both players turn in first* rate portrayals.
