Miss Josephine Bradley is spending a few days in Wellington as the guest of Mrs Dunley Rrooklynri. Mr and Mrs Cyril Loveday, of Ohura, are visiting Mrs Loveday's sister, Mrs N. Woodill, of Longburn. Miss Nancy Cook, who has been visiting Palmerston North and Woodville, has returned to Wellington.. Miss Veronica Sexton, of Gisborne, is a visitor to Palmerston North and is the guest of Miss Audrey Pearce, at whose wedding, this week, she will be a bridesmaid.
The death occurred in' Masterton yesterday of Mrs Rachel Smith, widow of the late Mr C. Heaton Smith. Mrs Smith was 85 years of age, and had lived in Masterton for the past 50 yeArs. She is survived by one daughter. Mrs S. J. Gilman, of Masterton. The Kairanga County Council yesterday received an invitation for the wives of councillors to act on the executive of the United Guild. It was stated that Mrs Lynch, wife of Cr T. 1). Lynch, had agreed to act on the executive. Councillors expressed the view that the matter was one for the individual ladies concerned and took no action.
The death has occurred 411 Auckland of Miss Jessie Ewart, formerly well known in the nursing profession. Miss Ewart began her training as a nurse in the Christchurch Hospital in 1895, and won so much distinction that five years later she was appointed woman superintendent of the Southland Hospital and its related institutions. This position she held till her retirement in 1924.
The Palmerston North branch of the Bed Cross Society, under the direction of Mrs W. H. Richardson (supervisor), yesterday completed the packing of a large case of goods, to bo sent overseas for refugees. Jt contains 250 garments, including 45 pairs of bloomers, 14 pairs of boys’ pants and five. costumes, the remainder consisting of men’s shirts, underclothes and women’s top-coats. More hospital comforts will bo packed shortly. At the monthly meeting of the Cuba Street Methodist Ladies’ Guild, yesterday afternoon, Mrs A. E. Fisher presided. New members welcomed were Mesdames Gwynn and Cole. A vote of sympathy was accorded Miss Dittmer in the death of her father. Final arrangements were made for the spring fair and flower show. The hostesses were Mesdames Twigge, Oldham, and Jury. It was decided that, for the! October meeting, each member bring a piece of new material or a garment to be handed over to the United Guild.
