EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” SEPTEMBER 10, 1910. The question of establishing the sugar beet industry was being discussed in Masterton, as well as Wanganui. It , was thought that a considerable area in the Wairara-pa was adapted to the cultivation of sugar beet. The death was announced in London of Mr Holman Hunt,' the well-known artist, who pointed “The Light of the World,” which was -shown in Palmerston North. In the final of the Manawatu ladies’ golf championship Miss Collins, New Zealand champion, beat Miss Wray, of Palmerston North, 4 and 3. The Earl of Plymouth suggested that the Crystal Palace, London, should bo preserved as a memorial to King Edward VII, as a huge Imperial club, by means of 750,000 life members subscribing one guinea. At Dundalk (Ireland) the Redmand Party captured. a hall in which Messrs Tim and Maurice Iloaley were announced to speak. _ There was an uproar and 600 extra police were despatched. Sir William Christie, who had been. Astronomer Royal since 1881, ictired and was succeeded by Mr F. W. .(later Sir Frank) Dyson.
