(From Our Own Correspondent. 7 SHANNON, Sept. 9.
At the annual meeting of the Volunteer Fire Brigade Superintendent W. Wishart presided over, a fill attendance of members, also present were Crs. E. Perry and A. F. Birss, Messrs J. T. Bovis, J. Curran and V. Tippler. The balance-sheet showed the brigade finished the year with a credit of £22. The book exchange showed a profit of £ll 14s, dance £ll 9s and hon. members’ fees £5. Helmets had been purchased from the Wellington Fire Brigade and working tunics from tho Palmerston North Brigade. The report stated that the brigade had been unfortunate in losing four good members, and that at one time it had only four members to carry on. Mr W. Radford, junr., the previous superintendent, who left Shannon to take up a position with the Wellington Eire Brigade, had been a member of the local, brigade for 13 years, and thanks were expressed for the work and interest be had, put into bis job. Mr V. Richards, who is. now with the Masterton Brigade, was also a keen member of long standing, and was a very capable secretary over a number of years. “To Privates Seaton and Retter, who have gone overseas to do their bit for our country,” said the superintendent, “we extend our best wishes. They are still members of our brigade, and wc hope to welcome them back before long.” The brigade had been fortunate in securing the services of four new members. Firemen F. Clough, D. Richards, N. Birch and D. Gyde. Thanks were expressed to all firemen for their work, which was purely of a voluntary nature. The past year had been profitable and eventful and" tho brigade' now found itself' in a very strong position. The only lack was a sufficiency of hose, a position in which all - brigades lound themselves, as it was unprocurable at present. There had been no ‘calls or fires over the past year. The brigade had purchased a car for £9, and a “working bee” had converted this into a fire engine. Officers elected are: —Superintendent, Mr W. Wishart; deputy-superinten-dent, Mr N. Richards; secretary and treasurer, Mr 11. Hermansson. Mr J. Curran was presented with an honorary member’s badge in recognition of his’ services to the brigade. Mr F. Thurston presided at a meeting of the R.S.A. Shannon being at present a sub-branch, the matter of forming an incorporated association was considered, and correspondence was received from headquarters with regard to the matter. Tho membership stands at 63, with prospects of reaching 70 shortly. Further consideration was left over to a later meeting. It was resolved to send 16 Christmas parcels to local men overseas. The Badminton Club donated £lO to the funds, as tho result of a recent dance. It was resolved to grant £1 Is to the Boy Scouts. Members are to take the responsibility of corresponding, with men on active service. Local recruits notified to enter camp are Messrs D. Aitchison, 11. Hill and E. Easton.
The Boy Scouts made a tour. of.the district for the eollortion of war waste material on Saturday and the first consignment is being sent forward immediately
