BOXING TOURNEY

There was a good attendance at the first aniluai boxing tournament of the lUarist Brothers' nigh bchool, held in tho Upera House last evening. Over MG bouts were provided, each of three one-minute rounds. Throughout the, evening there was much evidence of Eie teaching of tho basic principles in boxing, anti the contestants were willing and stout-hearted. The classes' have been held twice a week for just over one term, and the standard shown was high, considering the very short time the boys have been receiving instruction. To Messrs W. Broderick and , AV. Newman, the instructors, together with Brother Bernard, who exercises general supervision on behalf of the Brothers over the classes, much credit must go. It was announced that Mr E. llixori had donated a £lO 10s trophy for the boxer, taking part in last evening’s tournament, who has shown the most improvement by his display in next year’s tournament. The officials were.-—Referees, Messrs E. It. Wimsett ancj W. S. Ingram; stage manager, Mr James Purves; medical steward, Mr A. Scott; glove steward. Mr P. Trepo; judges, Messrs G. Watcliorn and I. C. Robinson; timekeepers, Messrs W. M. Crystall and N. D. Stubbs.

St. Paul’s House won the cup presented by Mr P. Bourke (Patea) for the school house training most points, the points being: St. Paul’s 16, St. Peter’s 13, St. Joseph’s 10, St. Francis’ 9. The winner of a cup presented bv Mr Broderick for the most scientific boxer was M. Bell, and P. Grey won a cup presented by Mr J. Hodgens, M.P., for tlie contestant who trained most consistently. A. MacDonald won a cup presented by Mr J. Thackery (Rongotea) for the gamest loser. Mr V. Hannah (Palmerston North) donated several miniature trophies. The trophies were presented by Rt. Rev. Monsignor MacManus, who expressed his pleasure at the good attendance and appreciation of the assistance which had come forward in various ways for the holding of the tournament.

Brother Tarcisius said the Brothers were very grateful for the assistance given and he mentioned the Manawatu Boxing Association, the committee controlling the seating round the ring, Drs. C. W. Peach and H. J. C. Dunvard, the donors of cups, Messrs Newman and Broderick for their interest in the class, and Brother Bernard for the secretarial work in connection with the tournament.
