Tho combination of circumstances which cqmpeilcd the Wanganui Jockey Club to transfer its spring meeting to Awapuni appears lo have proved a blessing m disguise, for the experience last week, in spite of unfavourable weather, suggests that the club will be able to show a substantial profit as a result of tlio two-day meeting, says the Chronicle. With tho Wanganui racecoiirso likely to be occupied by the military authorities for an unspecified period, the chances are that the Wanganui Jockey Club will havo to look further afield again for its autumn and winter fixtures.

Mr G. W. H. Vercoe’s Death. Mr G. W. 11. Vercoc) who died at the. ago of 71 years at Hamilton oil Friday, was for many years president of the Waikato Racing Club, and was also chairman of tho Auckland County Racing Breeders’ Association, which' imported tho sires Gay Comet and ~ Archiestown. Mr Vcrcoe was associated with Mr T, Wilson, of Waimai, in a thoroughbred stud which produced Wiltshire, winner of two successive Ncyv Zealand Grand - National Steoplechases, and also winners of the Great, Northern Steeplechase. Mr Vercoe is survived by his wife, five sons and two daughters. Late Keith Voitre. To-day is the second anniversary of the death of the jockey Keith Voitro, as a result of injuries suffered when Frill Prince fell with him in tho Budgeree Handicap at Mooneo Valley, Australia. At the same mooting, two years before that, Voitre had suffered a broken leg which kept him out of the saddle for 15 months, when Valiant Chief fell in the Quality Handicap. Riding Engagements.
