EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” JUNE 11, 1910. R. J. Scott (champion of New Zealand) and Gordon Smith. (Pahiatua) were to wrestle, catch-as-catch-can, in Palmerston North, for a purse of £2O. Advice had been received to the effect that a' Japanese lieutenant named Shirafe was organising an expedition to go to the South Pole.-Shirafe intended to use sleighs .and Manchurian ponies. A message from London stated that the Coronation of King George V was to take place on either June 21 or 2S in 1911. . r The death had occurred of Sir George Newnes, the founder of the Strand magazine. He was one of the most notable journalists of the day. Beaurepaire. the Victorian swimmer, had broken the world’s record for 440 yards, set by Lustorres, of Hungary. Beaurepaire covered the distance in smin. 23sec.
