PATRIOTIC SOCIETY.
HELPING RETURNED SOLDIERS. The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford), who is chairman of the Manawatu Patriotic Society, in his report to be presented to the annual meeting states that the year ended March 31. 1940, has been somewhat similar to the last few years. The grants to ex-sol-diers or their dependants have been a little higher than last year, but no special calls were made this, year by the Returned Soldiers’ Association on behalf of their unemployed members. “We have had many more callers this year for temporary assistance from exsoldiers who usually reside in other parts of New Zealand, and these have had sympathetic treatment from us,” the report adds. “We are able to render a service to other societies whose ex-soldiers reside in Palmerston North, and 1 would like to express our thanks to the various patriotic societies in other parts of New Zealand for their valuable help to those ex-soldiers who are our particular care. “The careful administration of the funds since the formation of the society is clearly shown in the state of our finances, and it is very pleasing to know that we have ample funds for any calls likely to he made On us in the future. Certain very necessary renovations have been carried out this year at the Soldiers’ Club, and this society is a'lways pleased to do w.hat it can for the comfort of the many retained men who make use of the club. We are indebted to the local Returned Soldiers’ Association for their valuable, help and co-operation. During the past twelve, months we have been able to assist some returned soldiers who, have never previously had assistance, and with the passing of the years there is no doubt we will be called upon to assist many more of these men. It must bo a source of pleasure to those who gave so generously to the funds that their contributions are helping those ex-sol-diers who really are in need of some temporary relief. I wish to thunk particularly Mr B. J. Jacobs for his valuable imlp and guidance during the year. Pie is a busy man with many calls on his time, and he lias been a tower of strength for many years to this society,” the report . concludes.
