ORGANISED HELP PROPOSED. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, June 8. • The petition to Parliament by the Mayor of Hastings suggesting that there should be an invitation front New Zealand to take a large number of children from England was supported yesterday by similar petitions from Opawa and New Though in the ordinary course these would have been formally dealt with, in this instance the Prime Minister interposed with an explanation that, in regard to these petitions, which were welcomed, the Government had communicated with the High Commissioner in London asking for information as to what could be done by this country, and further detail's would arrive by air mail. . “Then we can see,” concluded Mr Fraser, “what hospitality can he expended on an organised scale, and not in any burst of enthusiasm which might wane as quickly as it arose.” OFFERS FROM AUCKLAND. Per Press Association. .AUCKLAND. June 7. Homes for 548 refugee children from the war zones have-now been offered by residents in the Auckland metropolitan area and of several districts in the Auckland province. Offers from country districts totalled 80. Among the offers received was one from Bishop Liston to accommodate 25 refugee boys in a Takapumi orphanage and 15 girls in a Howick institution. Advice was also received that Bishop Cherrington had arranged that the Waikato Diocese would make itself responsible for a minimum of 25 children. This offer would not in any way i preclude people of the Church from i making individual offers.
