NEW ZEALAND OFFICERS. “TRAINING SCHEME. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 9. The inauguration by the Government of a scheme for the/ entry of New Zealanders as officers in the New Zealand Naval Forces was announced this evening by Hon. F. Jones (Defence Minister). The scheme, he said, formed part of the Government’s policy,, which aimed eventually to man the New Zealand Naval Forces by New Zealand officers and men. The new'scheme applied to the executive, engineering, and accountant branches. “At the 'inception of the ■ scheme the number to be entered will be small arid entered once a year only,” said Mr Jones. “For this year two candidates are required ror each branch. The successful candidates will be entered as cadets (E) and probationary paymaster suh-lieutenants according to the branch chosen. . “Candidates for entry as cadets must bo between the ages of 17 years and 18 years and 8 months, for entry as cadets (E) between 17 and 19, and for entry as probationary paymaster sub-lieutenants between 19 and 24 .in all cases on December 31 next. All officers on entry will be sent to England for training witn me Royal Navy, the executive cadets for about three years, two of which, preceded by a term at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, they will spend with seagoing fleets. “The passages to England and return are to be paid by the Government. Some slight financial assistance must be given by the parents of cadets, but sub-lieutenants are able to live on their pay. There are no tuition fees for the training given, but parents must provide the initial outfit, toward which a liberal grant is made. Cadets and cadets (E) receive a further grant for the purchase of their uniforms "on reaching the rank of sub-lieutenant.”
