PIG COUNCIL

INCREASED LEVY SUPPORTED. CONTACTS WITH SCHOOLS. Proposals that there should be ail increased levy on pigs killed, to provide more money for instructional work to be carried on by the Pig Councils, were discussed further by the Wellington District Pig Council at its monthly meeting. Members reported on the reaction of farmers in their districts to the suggestions, and said that once the position wgs fuIP/, explained to 'them they readily supported this increase. A good deal of misapprehension existed as to the levy, but it was pointed out that the whole of the funds so secured were being used for instructional work. Jhe meeting supported the suggestions for the increased levy. Those present at the meeting were Messrs. B. E. Kciller (chairman). W. J. Crouchcr, H. A. Bayley, C. J. Eglmton, T. Collins, M. M. Cooper, D. T. Johnston. Also in attendance were Messrs A. A. Johnson (supervisor) and J. J. Stovenson (agricultural instructor to the Wellington Education Board), The chairman welcomed Messrs Cooper and Stevenson, offering them the fullest co-operation of the council in their work. Remits to go before the annual meeting of the National Council in Wellington were considered and the delegate .given an indication as to the course to follow. _— _ Mr Johnson reported on his activities for the .past few weeks. He had been particularly busy assisting the pig clubs and.making arrangements for the Winter Show bacon exhibit. He pointed out that there was increased activity in building pig accommodation for the farmers. Mr Stevenson brought’ before the meeting proposals to utilise the calf clubs in the Wellington Education Board’s district with the object of promoting , interest in pigraising. He outlined in detail what he proposed to do and received a number of suggestions from the meeting, the members of which complimented Mr Stevenson on his activities. A prolonged discussion ensued on matters on which the council might usefully engage its attention in promoting the war effort, and it was agreed that a sub-com-mitteo consisting of Messrs. Crouchcr, Bayley and Cooper go fully into the matter and submit a report to the Minister of Agriculture.
