ARMY RESERVE.
AUSTRALIAN EX-SOLDIERS. .MELBOURNE, June 5. The Returned Soldiers’ League throughout Australia is to be lormed into an official army reserve which can be used for home defence, including the manning of forts if required by the The Army Minister (Mr G. .A. Street) said that following discussions between the military authorities and League officials a scheme was drawn up which would enable the League to help Australia. The arrangements, all of which will he, carried out within the League itself, include organising fit members into an army reserve of specialist groups such as signallers and machine-gunners. The Government is not providing quarters, uniforms) pay or instructors unless conditions make tlie absorption of such men necessary.. Tlio force may be called on as instructors at A.I.F. camps to release men for overseas. It was announced in Melbourne to-day that applications for enlistment throughout the Commonwealth since the recruiting drive began three weeks ago totalled over 35,000, the majority of whom have already been drafted to camps.
