TEMPORARY SERVICE.

MEN FOR R.N.V.R. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 6. At the request of the Admiralty in England, an appeal is being made for a limited number of men for temporary service for the duration of the war as officers of the R.N.V.R. Service will be overseas with ships of the Imperial Naval Forces and not. in New Zealand. There are two distinct schemes. One is limited to men of 30 to .40 years of age who will be commissioned as

probationary temporary sub-lieutenants and be confirmed in this rank after three months’ service. They can then be considered for promotion to the rank of temporary lieutenant if recommended. Candidates must hold a New Zealand certificate of competency’ as master of a pleasure yacht in New Zealand waters or the British Board of Trade Yachtmasters’ coastal certificate. or produce satisfactory proof that they possess the equivalent knowledge of navigation. The other scheme is open to men between 20 and-30 with preference for 20 to 25 years. These will be enrolled as ordinary seamen with a view to promotion to officers’ rank. After a course of preliminary training in England thev will serve at sea for three months and then he considered for promotion as probationary temporary sub-lieutenants. If selected they will undergo further training, and if they pass the course will he granted temporary commissions. If not selected for a commission they must serve for the remainder of the war as lower deck ratings. Candidates must have passed the New Zealand University entrance examination or the equivalent. The medical examination that must be passed includes perfect eyesight, colour, and vision. After reviewing the two schemes, the Minister said: fit is very important to note carefully the conditions, because if men who are ineligible apply this will only result in disappointment to themselves, extra work for the staff of the Naval Department, and delay in making selections from candidates who really lire qualified to be considered. “Because these schemes differ so largely from previous schemes of naval recruitment it is impossible to make use of applications which have already, been sent from time to time to the naval authorities. For this reason all men who have already applied for naval service -in any form, ' including thonse who were interviewed with a view to selection for R.N.V.R. commissions, are requested to apply airesli.
