GREAT EMPIRE SCHEME. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, June 4. 7 The first graduates of the Empire air training scheme operating in Canada have been “passed out” of two schools as qualified aircraftsmen. These men are the vanguard of thousands or Empire airmen who will be trained in Canada "by a staff of some 40,000 with four thousand aeroplanes in constant use. Amongst the latest decorations awarded Royal Air Force personnel is the Distinguished Flying Cross to Squadron-Leader Halahan, whose squadron has already destroyed 70 enemy aircraft. The Under-Secretary for Air (Captain H. IT. Balfour) stated in the House of Commons that German aircraft engaged in troop-carrying operations were generally unarmed transport craft. In addition to the usual small arms, he believed it was known that the troops carried had been equipped with heavy machine-guns or 20mm and 30mm calibre, scm and 5.75 cm mortars. 7.5 infantry guns, and possibly light howitzers.
