THE WINTER SHOW.

AYhilo it is realised that a considerable number of patrons of the Winter Show are more particularly interested in the various forms of outdoor entertainment arranged for their benefit and in general 'terms display .little or no interest in the agricultural side of tho exhibition, the central fact remains that tho improvement of farming in all its phases is the primal function of the Manawatu A. and P. Association. A survey of the commodious produce halls pointedly emphasises this fact. Here arc to be found immense pyramids of butter and cheese, the product of the world’s best pastures; tier upon tier upon tier of luscious fruit from the orchards; row upon row of mangolds, potatoes, swedes and all other varieties of root and fodder crops which grow to perfection in this fertile area. This, together with other sections devoted to the display of fat lambs, chilled beef and bacon, provides striking proof of what is being done by human skill and applied science to increase the yields and improve the quality- of products of the land. Our national industry now and in the future is .based oil agriculture, and the association has been created to further farming pursuits throughout the years—to advocate and demonstrate new- methods and to give encouragement to the youth _to devote their energies to open air' pursuits. A gratifying response to this feature is reflected in tho numerous high quality entries that have been forthcoming from -school garden plots/boys’ and girls’ clubs and young farmers’ clubs, all of whom have contributed in the aggregate a most imposing exhibition which proclaims that, the future of farming in this land will be in good hands.
