CRUSHING FIFTH COLUMN.
ACTION IN MANY QUARTERS. LONDON, June 4. The police continue to round up Germans, states a Cairo message. The Prime Minister (Ali Maher Pasha) declared that the Government was studying new measures against Fifth Columnists. Aliens are required to appear at the police stations to prove their identity. " Special police are' stationed in the streets of Alexandria in order to scan the skies for parachutists. " The Prime Minister said in an interview that Egypt would stand by Britain in the spirit of the AngloEgyptian treaty. He also said that cooperation between Egypt and Great Britain was closer now than ever before. Palestine, too, is ready, and the nation-wide black-out begun as a test has been made permanent till further notice. At Nicosia (Cyprus) armed police have been posted at Government House and Government offices. Precautions against Fifth Columnists continue, says a Buenos Aires message. The Post Office has issued a warning that news reports must be objective and must be based on official or news agency communiques. It declares that tendencious broadcasts will result in the cancellation of licenses and states further that the retransmission ol foreign broadcasts must be authorised. A frankly pro-German daily, the Diario Aleman, has suddenly appeared on the streets (states a despatch from Mexico City). The editorial stated: “This is a war newspaper to give the truth of the situation.” It issued a warning that Allied propaganda was designed to involve Mexico in a “war of compromises,” the result of which would be United States domination ol Mexico i In London R. R. Bellamy and Arthur Smith, leaders of the Canterbury branch of the Fascist ,Union,, were detained after a police- raid on the branch headquarters. V The police in Dublin have arrested 200 I.R.A. suspects in a country-wide round-up. The " police began before dawn and grabbed most of their victims in their beds. Arrests in Cork totalled between 40 and 50.
