BOMBING OF NAZI CITY.

FRENCH MINISTRY’S DENIAL: (LONDON/June 4. The Berlin News Agency reports that 53 civilians were killed and 151 wounded by an enemy raid against the open town of Freiburg-im-Breisgau (ten miles across the frontier due east of Colmar). Those killed included 20 children.

The Air Ministry in Paris denies the raid and declares it is obviously an attempt to justify the bombing of Paris. It is significant that no date is given for the alleged raid. . The Germans made the same untrue allegation some weeks ago. Practically all the German wireless stations faded out last night, including Berlin and Hamburg, at 11.40.

The city of Freiburg-im-Breisgau is in Baderi. near the western borders of the Ulack Forest, 40. miles south of Strasbourg. Its Gothic cathedral is one of the most perfect of its kind, and the tower is celebrated for its delicate beauty of outline. There are many fine ancient buildings and spacious gardens. The city, which ha? a population of 90.000, has manufactures of textiles and carries on trade in wine, timber, tobacco, silk and thread. Freiburg has repeatedly changed masters. Twice it was given over to France (1679-97 and 1744-45). In 1805 it fell to Baden and in 1843 the Baden revolutionaries were defeated here by the troops of the German Confederation. Received June 5, 10.30 a.m. BERNE, June 4. A High Command communique says it is believed Swiss ’planes shot down two or three German ’planes in a battle over the Swiss Jura. One Swiss aircraft was brought clown and the pilot killed.
