Difficulties in securing sufficient supplies ,of steel have slowed down the pace of construction work on the Palmerston North railway deviation, but this is 'the only reason for an apparent slackening of recent weeks. ■ Explaining the reasons, for shortage of steel, the Minister ot Public Works (Hon R. Semple) pointed out to the “Manawatu Standard’s” correspondent that the Broken Hill strike reduced the supplies for a while, and that the moie important point to-day is that Australia is making every effort in legard to home defence.
