The Australian Prime Minister 1 (Mr R. G. Menzies) lias deprecated the idea of forming an Australia national guard. He said that as far as lie was concerned the stories of its formation were completely speculative. (A Svdney message published earlier stated: The Federal Government will call for 60,000 volunteers to form a,national service'guard for the defence of vital points.) According to a British Official Wireless message, the Lord Mayor of London’s Red Cross and St. John Fund increased last week by £50,000, and now stands at £1,554,000. Owing to the-heavy loss of Red Cross supplies and ambulances in the fighting in Northern France and Belgium the Lord Mayor is asking for increased support. , The British Commander-in-Chief in France (Lord Gort) has sent a message to the inhabitants of a southeast coast town expressing gratitude for the way in which his troops were received and provided with rations on their return from Dunkirk. —British Official Wireless. At New York, a Federal Grand Jury indicted Joseph Schenck (president of Twentieth Century-Fox) on charges of defrauding the Government of over 400,000 dollars income tax, also for conspiracy and perjury; The- Indian Government has announced three new war loans, including interest-free bonds to attract Moslems, whose religion forbids the acceptance of interest. | General Sir Edmund Ironside is | meeting the leaders of the local de|.fence volunteers in Britain to-day land to-morrow to explain the part to be played by the volunteers, who will act under military authority as an I integral part of the armed forces.
