(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, June 3. At a meeting of the Buckley Drainage Board it was decided to lodge an application with the Public Works Department for a subsidy for deepening' ana widening both the main outlet dram of tho Buckley sub-division, and the upper Koputaroa Stream; In the Buckley outlet, during heavy rains, if the river is up and the. floodgate closed, hill waters flood the low-lying land, and improvements to the main outlet drain are required to allow as quick a discharge as possible. The Koputaroa Stream for a considerable portion of 200 chains runs through a block of land alongside the Main Trunk railway line, the low lands of which have been held for 45 years undeveloped owing to lack of drains. Two blocks of native development land are included .in this area, but owing to lack of drainage little result has ooon obtained for considerable expenditure. The hoard has a contract now in progress for deepening one and a-quarter miles of the lower Koputaroa from the Manawatu River to the railway. Repairs to the Johnson Street bank, at an estimated cost of £3O aro to be carried out. Mr L. Jenkins waited on the board’s meeting and asked tilt board to give an improved outlet to drains on his property. The' matter was left in the handß of Trustees Bowler and Roberts, to confer with other intcresfea property, owners with a view to arranging a satisfactory settlement. Ven. Bede’s Church held its annual patronal festival, the service being conducted by Rev. Mi Stotc-Blandy, with the assistance of the All Saints Church choir (Foxton). Afterwards a social was held in the parish hall. To raise funds to enable the local R.S.A. to carry on their work of making .n suitable ■' presentation to each local soldier as ho leaves for overseas, a street stall was held. The response from the public was beyond all expectations, sales resulting in the handsome sum of between £SO and £6O being raised. . Mrs J. D. Campbell is oil a visit to her sister in Gisborne. Mr and Mrs A. IT. Richards are visiting their daughter in Taihape. Staying with hbr parents Mr and Mrs J. A. Roach, is -Mrs F,. J. Harkness (formerly Miss Rita Roachl, of _Aiglbourne. Mr and Mrs G. L. McEwen are shortly leaving to take up their residence at Oroua Downs. ■ . The school is assisting towards the local patriotic funds and last week, as the result of a small concert held at the school, the sum of £2 10s 6d was raised for the bind. It is intended to mnke further effort, both pupils and staff being, much interested in the appeal. , Donations towards tho Sick. Wounded and Distress Fund include: Mr W. Clayton, £5; Mrs A, "Venn. £3 3s; Mr and Mrs J. T Bovis, £2 2s. Donations are being received at the town clerk’s office.
