MOTORIST’S OFFENCE.
Before Mr H. P. La'wry, S.M., in tlie Magistrate’s Court, to-day, i Leonard Arthur Johnston, salesman, aged 39, of Palmerston North, was charged that, on June 3, in Broadway, lie was in charge of a motor-car when in a state of intoxication. Mr T. M. N. Rodgers, who appeared for defendant, said it was a border-line case and asked that consideration bo given the fact that defendant earned his living with his car.
“The day has passed when the mere fact that a man earns his livelihood by means of a car may be considered in these cases,” said the Magistrate. The sentence was a fine of £lO, with the cancellation • of defendant’s driving license, and he is not to*procure another for a year. He is also to pay £1 Is medical expenses. On a charge of not carrying a. current warrant of fitness defendant was fined 10s. SeniorSergeant J. Mclntyre explained that defendant was .seen to enter a car in Broadway oh Monday, being then under the influence of liquor. A constable intervened before defendant could drive the car away.
