WAR CABINET

NECESSITY URGED. HARBOUR BOARD’S VIEW. A resolution favouring the formation of a National War Cabinet as the best means of prosechting New Zealand’s war effort was passed at a meeting of the l'oxton Harbour Board to-day. A letter was received from the Harbour’Boards’ Industrial Union of Employers submitting a copy of a letter received from the Minister of Labour (Hon. P. C. Webb) asking that every endeavour be made to avoid'any disruption or stoppage of work during the war. The Minister’s’letter appealed for a commonsense method in the adjustment of disputes. _ The chairman (Mr J: Linklater) said that he was sure that as far as the board was concerned it was willing and anxious to co-operate in every way. Unfortunately it had not a great deal of work going on at the moment. Mr M. E. Perreau moved 1 that a resolution he passed expressing the board’s willingness to co-operate . in every way, . and at the same time recommending tlie .Government to form a National Cabinet for the prosecution of, the war. He said that the hoard should express its appreciation of the work being done and show its willingness to assist in every way possible in the- prosecution of the’ war, but at the same fyine it should show that it considered that the war effort could' be conducted most successfully in a National Cabinet. Tlie chairman, who seconded the motion, said that he agreed with these sentiments. It would give great satisfaction throughout New Zealand if the resolution was carried into effect. Mr E. J. Bowator said that he wished to oppose the motion, but not in a biassed way. The Government was doing a great deal and he did not think it was wise for the board to ask" for certain tilings before giving its full cooperation to the Government. Mr J. A- Nash said that that attitude was not expressed in the resolution. Mr Bowater said that the attitude he expressed was his feeling, and he would vote against the resolution. The resolution was carried.
