RONGOTEA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) RONGOTEA, June 1. The Coronation Hall was packed for the R.S.A. dance, which brought to a conclusion the queen carnival. .A ladies’ committee had decorated the hall. There was a" very large attendance and. excellent music for the dancing was supplied. The president of the Rongotca R.S.A. (Mr W. A. Churchill) expressed appreciation of the very large attendance and spoke of the pur-1 pose of the entertainment, which was to show some tangible recognition to the three “queens” who had been so largely responsible for the success of the recent carnival, by which the R.S.A. raised some £450 for its relief fund. He thanked all who had given help and offered his congratulations to the Glen Oroua queen, Miss Jeanette Scott, who was the winning candidate. At the same time ho tied oh her shoulder a sash of royal purple lettered in silver, to commemorate the occasion. Mr Churchill also handed a case to the three conveners of the ladies’ committees. Mesdames F. C. McKay, W. A. Churchill, and W. Russell, who placed a handsome double pearl necklet on each girl, all being given musical honours. Mr H. V. Bond, president of the Bulb R.S.A., congratulated the. Rongotca auxiliary on its wonderful effort and also the three young ladies who had worked so hard for the carnival. Misses Scott and Berkahn thanked their own committees and the R.S.'A. Miss Jeanette Scott wore a frock of ivory satin, Miss Berkahn a model frock of black net embroidered all over m gold, and Miss Jeannie Glasgow a frock of white taffeta. A meeting convened by Mr A. N- Morcoin decided to canvass the district for the Sick and Wounded Fund and collectors have been out during the present week, nearly all meeting with very gratifying ,re-‘ spouses. Mr A. K. Drew, of Sanson, attended the Rongotea meeting and outlined : what had been done in other districts throughout the county. Suggestions were made for the holding of dances to raise funds for the purpose and any other patriotic effort, but the ladies’ committee (Mrs W. Davis, convener) considered that unless the district was nrepared to get behind the ; committee and donate the supper for these dances it would be useless to expect to make any profit to hand over for patriotic purposes. The Te Kawau Piano Accordion Band, it was stated, was prepared to give its services for any patriotic effort.
