CITY’S MILK SUPPLY.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Under the above caption there was published a report in .your issue of 28-5-40 of a deputation that waited on the City Council. Mrs E. N. Harrod (who by the way is president of the Women’s Co-operative Guild) stated that over 100 persons were engaged in the milk trade, and it was reported to her that they all operated in one street. What a 6py system! It sounds good. She quotes Auckland, but cunningly refrains from quoting Wellington. Palmerston North citizens have a first rahe supply of good milk, and when Wellington citizens visit this city they comment on the quality of our milk, also the price charged in comparison with Wellington. The Palmerston North City Council would be ill-advised if it interferes with the present system. The ratepayers have to nurse “twins” at the present time—abattoirs and gas works. I think more interest can be taken in the national welfare than by attempting to foist Socialism on already, heavily taxed ratepayers. Are Mr and Mrs Harrod ratepayers ? Thanks are due to the citizens who used such sound judgment in electing such a council to manage the affairs of this city, and I have no doubt that they will give a municipal milk scheme the consideration due to it. The cost of the installation of a suitable plant and the compensation to be awarded to present milk vendors is something that Mrs Harrod has probably not considered. Mrs Robertson stated that a municipal milk scheme was not possible at the present time. Well, why did the deputation wait on the council? As a citizen of humble means I consume one quart of milk daily, and I am well satisfied with my vendor, as I have only received one pint of unsatisfactory milk in two years, and I do not think the vendor was to blame. —I am, etc., FRESH MILK. 29-5-40.
