EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD,” MAY 16, 1910. Arrangements had been made whereby a wireless message would be sent each midnight from the Eiffel Tower to enable mariners to find their longitude. Messrs J. C. "Williamson’s Grand Opera Company, including Miss Amy Castles, Mr Bel Sorel and Signor Hayon, had left Australia for New Zealand. . The death had occurred at Nauheim (Germany) of Mr F. E. Baume, M.P. lor Auckland. Mr Baume had taken a keen interest in local government as well as parliamentary affairs. A riot nearly occurred' at the head of the "Wellington' pit, Whitehaven, when it was announced lliat the pit was to be closed following the disaster.
