B. CARSLAKE RETIRES.

COLLAPSED AFTER WINNING RACE. The former Australian jockey Bernard Carelakc has retired from race riding, actingon medical advice, says a Loncjon report. Ho collapsed after winning a race at Ipswich on April 20, his first win this season. He will set up as a trainer. Carslako, known as “Brownie,” was born in 1887' at Caulfield, Melbourne. Ho was taught race-riding by his father, a leading trainer. He went to England in 1906, but from then until the Great War did most of his riding on the Continent, especially in Austria and Hungary. He had many wartime adventures, escaping first to Rumania, disguised as a railway fireman, and then to Russia, from where he had to flee when the Revolution broke out. Since 1919 he lias bad many successes in England. He retired from racing in 1928 and set up as a trainer. He returned to the saddle in 1930, and since then has enhanced his reputation as a jockey. He rode 35 winners last season, despite limited opportunities through his weight.
