IMPROVEMENTS TO SCHOOLS. DISTRICT APPLICATIONS. The monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was held yesterday, when those present were Mr E. F. Hemingway (chairman), Colonel J. H. Whyte, Messrs W. H. Brown, A. S. Coleman, I. W. Mudford, J. W. Batchelar, L. A. Bailey, P. Muiiro, W. T. Benefield, and N. Annabell. The M*est End School ' Committee renewed an application for the installation of central heating and submitted alternative proposals for gas heating if central heating is not available.—lt was reported that a departmental grant of two-thirds of the cost had been made for the installation of a central heating plant. Mr Brown: Does that mean that the installation will 'take place immediately? Mr E. B. Hodge (the architect) : 1 have secured the goods, most of them, and they are being held in Wellington Colonel Whyte : And will the installation be finished before the winter is over ? Mr Hodge: We would put a time limit on the contract and I think it would be completed in a month from the . commencement. lam working on the specifications now. The Bunnythorpe School Committee applied for a contribution toward the cost of extending the asphalt area at the school, and the architect reported that the total cost would be £75. He recommended that the matter be placed on the list of ground improvements for submission to the Education Department for a grant to cover the total cost. —On the motion of Mr Batchelar, seconded by Mr Mudford, the report was adopted. The Education Department advised that a grant had been made for the provision of a new school at Halcombe. The chairman remarked that the residents would be very pleased. Later, Mr Mudford asked what the position was in respect of the levelling of the grounds and th© secretary said the county engineer n r as to take levels shortly. To date, he has been advised, the engineer had not had the time to do so. I
■ The Clydesdale School Committee wrote requesting the erection of a cycle shed. —On the motion of Mr Mudford, seconded by Mr Batchelar, adopted a recommendation from the architect that the matter he investigated and that, if a favourable view is held, the shed be provided. The Foxton District High School Committee requested the provision of coke storage facilities.—Mr Mudford explained that now that the Foxton gasworks were closed coke had to be bought in a large quantity and stored On his motion, a recommendation by the architect that a grant of £25. bo made was adopted. The Milson School Committee sought additional cycle shed accommodation. On the recommendation of the architect, adopted on the motion of 'Messrs Batchelar and Brown, it was decided that the accommodation be provided, i The architect reported that the windows of the Central School wore in a bad condition. To repair them as a permanent measure would be very expensive. In the meantime, the windows in one wing were being attended to and another report would be made later as to what would' be the total cost. Mr Brown expressed appreciation that action was being taken, saying that the windows had been in a bad condition for a number of years. The architect reported that, as tar could not be used effectively for topdressing asphalt areas at the Terrace End ground, new 'tenders were being sought for the top-dressing of the area with a bituminous preparation. The teacher at the Waituna West School applied for the provision of a water tank and the glassing of a verandah.—Granted, on the motion of Mr Batchelar, seconded by Mr Mudford .
The West End School Committee sought the provision of an incincerator and it was decided that this he granted.
The Lytton Street School Committee asked for a grant for the provision of n motor mower and the usual grant of £5 was made on the motion of Mr Batchelar.
The Tiakitaliuna School Committee requested that the school lie closed and the children conveyed to the Longbnrn School.—The subject is to bo considered further later.
