PAHIATUA.
Mr L. W. O. lo Comte, of Waipawa, and late of Pahiatua, was a visitor to Pahiatua yesterday. At a meeting of the Loyal Manga lainoka Lodge Bro. S. Davenport, N.G., presided. One new member was initiated. Nominations for officers were called for several positions. Several members received degree lecturo instruction, which was imparted by the L.M., Sister M. Pvvde. The 29-inch fish found last week by Mr G. Smith in the Mangatainoka River at Hamua iias now been identified as a quinnat salmon,. following enquiries made by Mr A. J. Morgan, secretary of the Pahiatua branch of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society. EKETAIIUNA. At a meeting of the Eketalmna Borough Council when the estimates were being discussed, the Mayor (Mr Simpson) said that the financial position had shown a debit balance in all accounts ever since the conversion of loans had taken place. Out of the special rate of 9d 7d was needed for redemption, and the balance of 2d went in interest. It was desirable that the accounts should be placed in credit, and to do this an increase in rale would be necessary. The rates for the ensuing year were struck as follow, last year's figures being given in parentheses: General, sjd (6d); hospital, l|d (lid); sanitation, Id (Id); street lighting, 2d (lad). Special rates: Conversion, No. 1, (2|d); conversion No. 2, 3|d (3|d): water No. 4, 2|d (2id). Totals, Is 7d (Is 6d). Water maintenance rates, 1 per cent. (1 per cent.). A recommendation that sodium or mercury vapour lighting be installed at various points in the borough was made in a report submitted by a committee set up by the council to. inquire into the proposal .The report was approved.
