EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” MAY 12, 1910. One hundred and thirty men were entombed when an explosion damaged the Wellington pit, the property of Lord Lonsdale, at Whitehaven, stated a London cablegram. Many of the men were three miles from land under the sea. Fire had broken out and it was considered that there was no hope of rescuing the men. The Naval Estimates were to he discussed in the House of Commons on June 8. Foreign royal guests for King Edward’s funeral were arriving in England. The Kaiser. Prince Henry of Prussia, and the King of Denmark had reached London.
