HANDICAP TO LIANE

O+A KI -M A O Rl' :M E ETIN G■> •" CHAT WINS STEEPLECHASE. (By “Specta’.or.”) Tlio Otaki-Maori Racing Club’s winter meeting was Held on tlic Otaki course on Saturday. The track was soft after the recent rain, but did not cut up badly. The weather was fine but dull, and there was a good attendance. There was some keen racing and good finishes in several events, while in others easy victories were registered. Speculation was brisk and the totalisator handled for the. eight races the sum of £15,801 10s, compared with £15,295 10s for the corresponding meeting last year,- when there were seven races. This year’s total showed an increase of £516. The club made complete arrangements and the meeting was managed expeditiously. _ v Something of a surprise was caused wjicn / Liane, one of the less favoured candidates, won ■ the open distance handicap after' a hard-lought : finish with Tide-waiter. Liane won practically all tlio way, but had little or nothing in reserve. She was ridden . a good race by 11. N. Wiggins.- Another little fancied candidate, Hit Maurier, won the open sprint,* the lluia Handicap, ili a good finish. Both jumping-events resolved themselves into struggles between two horses. El Aley.nclP jumped well to heat loluga in the hurdles, and these two went a long way better than anything else. The steeplechase attracted only five starters, and' -Chat wits not hard pressed to head Master Hector in the last furlong and win by a comfortable margin. Because of the large number of starters it was necessary to make two divisions of the piaideri race, running these as separate races. Both were won by well-fancied candidates, Batslniiii scoring in the first .division and X’urlato outclassing the field ■.• mu the second.-,' . .. . &■■■ Young Charles, a . warm*' favourite. ; --won the distance hack event without difficulty, and gave. H. Dulieu, the New Plymouth trainer, his second winner of the day," El Meynell also coming from this stable. 'Military Maid, another strong favourite, rwon the final event without difficulty. - HURDLES TO. EL MEYNEIiLf,. El Meynell nad the run of the race, in the Tararua .Hack Hurdles, and tbe-'quly opposition came from Tolaga, who could not hang on long enough at the end, ■ After Dungarvan held the - lead for a short period El Meynell and Tolaga opened up a gap of several lengths on the rest of the field, which was well strung out. Lady Chat fell early. Great Quex improved his position considerably coming round the back but could get nowhere near the leadors. El Meynell drew ‘jtway to beat Tolaga by a length with Rustem, who was tiring, just' hanging on' 'Hong enough to beat Great Quex for third. .Good Sun headed the others, a long’way back. OUTSIDER’S SPRINT.The favourites were beaten out of the money in the Hum. Handicap, the wmnei, Du Maurier, paying nearly a score.. Du Maurier moved up to be handy at. ■ the turn and had charge in the straight to win by a length. , ... „ 'Gold Ballad showed out early with Gay Chou, Quadroon, and Du Maurier , lhetc wero always in the first bunt-11. Sporting Gift, who got away badly, vya-s also handy but, could not hold on in the straight, after moving -up-on the outside. -Qu ~ Maurier held’on' to win from pay. Choti and Gold Ballad. Then came Alunga, who inovecl up fast, Dictate, Sleeveless and Master Cyklon/. all close. .Kuiwftka made a bad beginning and had. no chance. LIANE TAKES HANDICAP.

Liane won the Raukawa Handicap practically from end' !, tSs’ericl. hard ridden to hold olf challenges towards, the finish, but held on long enough. ■With half a mile to go Tidewaitcr was disputing tlio lead with Liane, and 'Mataroa was fast improving his position. Liane, Tidewaitcr, Aurora’s Star and Mataroa, turned into the straight -in that order,' the others being well out of the race.- - Liane was hard driven to beat Tidewaitcr,--who made a run on the rails, and Aurora’s Star and Mataroa were together in third, place. GOOD WIN FOR BATSHAM.

Batsharn was handily placed all the way and ran a good race to win the first division of the Kuku Maiden Flat Race. The winner was challenged at the finish by Loyal Queen,, but held on to win narrowly. Batsharn took over the lead at the turn, and with First Round opened up a good gap on the rest of the fielcj, headed by Loyal Queen. Batsharn had charge into the straight. First Round fell back, but Loyal Queen challenged strongly and was'beaten only bv a head. First Round was efdur lengths' back and then came Cherry Hunter, Vin Rouge, Equity, who started badly, and Little Margot. CHAT’S STEEPLECHASE.

Chat was not troubled' to win the Otaki Hack and Hunter’s Steeplechase. The race in'tho end resolved itself into a'duel between Chat and Master Hector but. Chat did not have to bo hard ridden to, win by a length. J ■ V After the first round Earl Colossus droptied well behind, and Chat, Master rEcctor and Ohanga were together. Master . Ilecfor went on in tho load’, with Chat close up arid Ohanga was left well in the rear. Chat was jumping better than Master Hector and after tho last fen re "drew away to win without the whip bpmg.s.used, while Master Hector was-under a:; hard drive. Ohanga,. Gaswyn and Earl Colossus finished at intervals. . ~ '

EASY WIN FOR PARLATO. Parlato outclassed the field, in the second division of the Maiden; Race and won going away by several lengths. He began best from an inside barrier position and never looked like losing. Following Parlalo out were Peach King. China Clipper, Royal l Portrait, and Miss Wheriko. Parlato opened up-at gap of two lengths and Miss Wheriko moved up to Head the others. Parlato' went on to win by six lengths. Miss Wheriko- fell Jack and Peach King was second : throC lengths in front of Greek Diana, who beat .Rphidcn, Royal Show and ILaiii.a-it.i-., A.• f: ’:Av-.

;. FIELD OUTCLASSED, a;-, Young Charles won the .distance lia.ck race as he liked. He led the ■ field' at thestart, but P. Atkins preferred to ,let him do his running in bchihd the-leading bunch till the straight wao reached, \vhcn nothing had a chance with him.-, Afe. ;s„,

Young Charles was the leader at . the start. Sir Musket was allowed .to take over the lead round the back, with Phil, Colincamps and Chore Ainic handy. At the turn Sir Musket was joined by Colibri, with Phil next, Young Charles in on the fence, and Titter and Colincampe following. Young Charles raced away in the straight to win fay four lengths, with Titter beating Sir Musket for second. Next wore Colibri. Cherc Ainic, Colincampe, Regicide • and Phil. LAST RACE TO MILITARY MAID. Military Maid was made a strong lavon rite for the last event, and although on the outside of the barrier moved away smartly and soon had the race in safe keeping, going away to win by four lengths when (ho straight was reached. _ Wakarara, .St. Grace, Golden Enterprise and Military ,Maid were the first to be prominent, the outside horses beginning quickest. Wakarara went on in the lead from Military Maid, and these two-opened up a good gap on the rest of the field. Debrotts, Heroic Maid, who got away badly, and Master Solway were at the head of tlio others. -Military Maid went on to win easily and Wakarara held on to beat Master Solway for second.
