RIVERS SUBSIDE.

The Oroua River and the Kiwitea and Makino Streams, which were in high flood on Friday, had gone down considerably on Saturday, although still carrying a large volume or water. It is understood that part or the Kopane area was flooded on Friday when the Oroua River overflowed in that locality. The cause of the flooding is due to the bed of the river having been raised by shingle deposits, and one old settler stated on Saturday that years ago it was impossible to get shingle from the Oroua River lower than Awahuri, whereas to-day it can be obtained 15 miles further down stream.
