MANAWATU RABBIT BOARD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, May 10. The monthly meeting of the Mannwatu Rabbit Boa.rd was held yesterday afternoon and was presided over by Trustee B, G. Gower. Also present were Trustees W. E. Barber, H. A. Bailey, and M. G. Toogood. In reply to an application from Mr C. H. Speirs for exemption of rotes, it was decided to reply that, after obtaining legal advice, the board finds that it has no power to give exemption of rates in respect of the property. The inspector (Mr D. R. Barron) reported, inter alia : The weather has been very suitable for rabbit destruction, both from a poisoning and fumigation point of view; especially is this so in reg'ard to fumigation, and a fair amount of this work has been put in hand. Poisoning has now begun in consequence of the circular sent out, but only a few arrangements for this work have been made. I would again strongly adviso landowners to havo this work done by men who havo had experience in this class of work. In some of the worst infected areas I intend to give personal supervision to the ploughing of furrows, etc. It is most essential that the work of poisoning should be speeded up wherever possible in, order to allow plenty of time for the second poisoning. The clearing of noxious weeds such as gorse, etc., is being carried out on a number of properties, and now that the busy season for farmers is over so far .as seasonal duties are concerned it will pay them to clear as much “cover’’ as possible from their properties during' the winter season. The strychnine carrot poisoning on the Forestry Reserve was begun on April 29. The report was received.
