WHAKARONGO
(From Our Own Correspondent.) WHAKARONGO, May 9. In the absence of Mrs S. Oxenham, the president, the chair at the last: institute meeting was taken by Mrs M. Phillip, who read the 'thought for the month which was “Make as much allowance for others as we would like them to make for us.” The roll-call, “Something Mother Wore,” elicited many interesting replies. Miss V. Burr’s resignation from the institute was received with regret, as was that of Mrs Clarke from the committee. Miss R. Park was appointed to the committee, Mrs Uhrbom moved a vote of thanks to Mrs Oxenham for standing as a member of the federation committee. A comprehensive report on the federation meeting was given by Mrs Closey, who spoke in a very interesting manner -of the proceedings. The institute was advised that the patriotic shop will be in its charge on June 17. It was decided not to pul an entry in the Winter Show, and a collection will be taken each month for a parcels fund. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs D. Scott, who gave an interesting talk on drama, giving members many' valuable hints on stagecraft, mentioning in particular grace of manner and the need for the players sinking their personality into the parts. She also entertained with a short reading from the play “April Showers.” Songs were sung by Miss Margaret Alderson. The hostesses were Mesdames A. Sly, F. Eagle, and-T. Closey. The competitions were won as follow: Hot-water ' bottle cover, Miss W. Vautier 1, Mrs Hastings 2, Mrs Cresswell 3; bloom, Mrs Askew 1, Mesdames Frith, Fountain and F. Smith 2, and Mesdames Eagle and Phillip and Miss H. Wood 3. For the next meeting husbands are to be invited and the hostesses will bo Misses Johanson, Sly, Olsen, IJhrbom, Hodgson and Vautier. The roll-call will bo “Something New Zealand is Famous For” ; the competitions, balaclava, jar of fruit, and the best bloom. .There will also be a travel talk. ’ •
There was a good attendance at the recent euchre and dance, the winners at which were: Mrs C. Puklowski I, Mrs G. Gillies 2; consolation, Mrs H. Crawford; Messrs G. Gillies, T,. Morgan and G. Hughes; consolation, Mr F. Smith.
Mr J. Morris presided over a full attendance at a Hall Committee meeting, at which Mr A. Crawford was appointed secretary and Mr 11. Wood treasurer. Arrangements were made to hold a ball to augment the funds.
Mr F. Eagle has returned--from a holiday in Wellington. Mr A. Rider is the guest of Mr and Mrs 11. Wood.
