TERMINATION OF WORK.
MEN AT HILLSIDE. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, May 9. Twenty-two employees of Hillside workshops have received notice terminating their employment as from Friday. The position was discussed at a mass meeting this afternoon, when an emphatic protest was made against the dismissals and the placing of such men on tlie No. 13 Scheme. “We also ask the Government,” the resolution added, “to honour tlie pledge made to the workers of New Zealand at the 1938 election that a vote for Labour was a vote for economic security.” OFFICIAL STATEMENT. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, May 9. It was stated in official quarters this evening that, as the work fluctuated, it was necessary to take men on and put them off. The Railways- Department was in touch with other State Departments, particularly the Labour Department, with, a view to continuity of employment for tho men concerned.
