Lord Blcdisloc has accepted office as patron of the New Zealand Founders’ Society, and lias presented the society with a framed autographed portrait of himself.
The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) has been indisposed daring the last few days and lias not been able to attend to public duties. He was reported today to be making a good recovery, and is expected to be able to resume his duties on Monday. , Mr A. G. C. Deuber, Assistant British Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, is presently returning to the Department of Overseas Trade, London. He came to New Zealand a year and a-half ago from Vancouver, where he was acting-Trade Commissioner. Mr W. L. Newnliam, of Wellington, has been appointed a member of the Main Highways Board in succession to Mr A. J. Baker, who has resigned. Mr Newnliam is second assistant engineer-in-chief to the Public Works Department. He will be deputy-chairman of the board. The Chief Justice, Rt. Hon. Sir Michael Myers, is to spend a few days at Napier, the sittings of the Supreme Court at Palmerston North, at which His Honour has presided, having closed except for the hearing of one matter, to be taken later. His Honour is accompanied by Lady Myers. Major S. M. Satterthwaite, N.Z.S.C., commandant’ of the District Military School, Burnham, has been appomteu second in command of the 25th (Wellington) Battalion, and will take up his new duties at Trentham next Tuesday. Captain R. J. Eyre will fill the position vacated by Major Satterthwaite. Among the passengers on the flyingboat Awarua to Auckland yesterday was Mr B. 'W. Newman, assistantdivisional , officer at Sydney for the Commonwealth Government Bureau of Meteorology. Mr Newman who has charge of the Sydney meteorological service for flying-boats, lias come to discuss matters of common interest with Mr L. N. Larsen, Government meteorologist at Auckland, and in particular to complete arrangements for co-ordinating weather forecasts at the termini of the Tasman service. Mr Larsen similarly visited Sydney some time ago.
Mr H. Hands, delegate from the Manawatu Referees’ Association on the Rugby Union’s management committee, lias been elected president of the New Zealand Referees’ Association. Mr Hands joined the Manawatu Referees’ Association in 1920 after being actively engaged in the game at this centre and has occupied several positions on the administrative side, while he has also refereed in leading matches. In Rugbv Union affairs he has taken a. prominent part over a number of years, being . now concerned solely with the administration of the game and of the referees’ service to it.
