Tlie recent icy conditions of the French roads have increased the number of lorry ditchings, consequently a B.E.F. unit, in an effort to increase driver efficiency, has instituted the “order of the scuttle.” This is a huge tin “iron cross,” on which are written the names of every ditched driver. The most recently ditched lorry carries the “order” oil its radiator, and the driver wears a replica slung by a- long red, white, and blue ribbon from his neck.
