RIVERS’ HIGH LEVEL.
BIGGEST FLOOD FOR YEARS* - Ter Press Association:. TIMARU, May 8. As a result of the steady rain of the past four (lays- all the rivers in South Canterbury are in. high hood. Large areas are inundated, and much damage has been done to root crops. The Orari River burst its banks at several places in the vicinity of Clandeboye, between Tenuika and the coast, and four families had to be evacuated. In the opinion of one settler the water has not been higher during the past 40 years. The Geraldine-Fairlie highway i« blocked as the result of the washing away of the Skirton bridge, and considerable damage is reported in other parts of Geraldine County. The approaches to several bridges are washed away and replacement will cost thou- * sands of pounds. The Main South Road is blocked as the result of the washing away of the north approach to the Waihao bridge. There are two detours, and both of these are flocked.
