MEN DISMISSED.
I SHORTAGE OF TRACTORS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, May 8. Because of the alleged shortage of logging tractors, fifty men employed in the new State Forest Service’s timber mill at Wliakarewarewa, near ltotOrua, have been dismissed, according to advice received by Mr W. Seator, president of the Timber Workers’ Union and secretary of the South Auckland branch of the union. Mr Seator commented to-day on the seriousness of the situation coming Soon after the request by the Commissioner of State Forests (Hon. F, Langstone) for co-operation in the transfer of men from public works jobs to the timber industry. He was at a loss to know why operations at a StaTo mill should be held up lor w’ant of tractors when, with a tapering off of public works, .tractors suitable l'ou logging purposes should be made available. When the above message was rcierred to tile State Forest Service in Wellington it was stated that the department had been advised that the services of five men were dispensed with. These men, who were labourers, had been employed on the construottion of the mill and no undertaking was given that they would be engaged in the operation of the mill.
