WOOD VILLE & DISTRICT

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The monthly meeting of the Papatavva Women’s Institute, which was well attended was presided over by Mrs L. Gleadow. Several members sent apologies for absence, including the secretary (Mrs W. Pirie), who was indisposed, Mrs A. K. Diekins undertaking the secretarial duties for the day. Miss R. Bradley read the motto for the day: “To have faults and not strive to correct them is to add to them.” A circular received from the National Patriotic Council led to a discussion on the making of hussifs for troops, and it was decided that each member make one according to the pattern supplied by the council. It was resolved, after a lengthy discussion, that the institute send a delegate to the biennial Dominion conference which will be held in Wellington in July. Mrs Diekins was appointed the Papatawa representative. A bank hook was presented to John Robert Hutchinson, the infant son of Mrs I. Hutchinson. In the courtc of a comprehensive report on the annual coun cil meeting held recently at W aipukurau, Mrs E. Martin said that the dele gates had been advised that a proposal would come forward for consideration at the next council meeting to divide the Southern Hawke’s Bay district as at present constituted into two separate federations, one to be known as the Central Hawke’s Bay Federation and the other as the Southern Hawke s Bay Federation. Mr H. McDonald, patrol officer to the Hawke s Bay Automobile Association, delivered an interesting address on the rules of the road and causes of accidents, his advice on how to avoid mishaps being appreciated by members He was accorded a vote of thanks on the motion of Mrs Martin. The “gingerbread competitions were won by Miss Joyce Gilbert (senior) and Miss Mary Dickins (junior).
