GUN DUEL IN DUBLIN.
POLICE AND I.R.A. MEMBERS. Received Mav 8. 9 25 a.m. DUBLIN, May 7. A desperate battle between detectives and six men believed to be members of the Irish Republican Army, who were armed with sub-machine-guns, occurred in the centre of Dublin when an attempt was made to seize mails being conveyed to uie ollice of the British representative (Sir John Maffey). The detectives were escorting the mails on motor cycles when the gang opened fire nea<- Morrion .Square, and the detectives flung . themselves on the ground and replied with their revolvers. The rattle of machine-gun fire sent the bystanders flying for cover. Two detectives were seriouslv.wounded. one having his revolver shot from his hand. One bandit was left lying in the roadway when the rest of the gang escaped in an automobile.
