EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD,”' MAY 8, 1910. The borough engineer '(Mr S. .Tickell) had''compiled a report, to be presented at a meeting of the Borough Council, on harnessing the Mangaliao River to provide electric power for Palmerston North. A complimentary banquet was to be tendered the Governor-General (Lord Plunket) by the Mayor'and councillors of Palmerston North. - An explosion had occurred in a coal mine in Ahibahma. - One hundred negroes and .white men had perished. Rescue work had to'be suspended owing:. to blackdamp. „ A New Zealand Rugby football team was to . visit Australia shortly. Fire’ had destroyed the Bunnythorpe Hotel, and a number of dwellings and two shops nearby had a narrow escape from a similar fate.
