SENTENCED TO PRISON.

Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, May G. Allegations that, during an assault made on him, his throat was slashed with a table knife and methylated spirits were thrown over him and set alight as he lay in bed were made by William Raymond Heenan, aged 7U, in evidence against Andrew Carney, aged 38, a labourer. Carney denied the assault. Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., convicted and sentenced him to two months’ imprisonment, with a further month on a charge of obscene language, which he admitted. Heenan said he was alpne in the house where he was living in Tui Street on the night of April 29. At II 30 he was awakened by banging on' the side of the house Somebody called out to open the door. He refused and someone called out « you don’t open it we will bust it in! The door was broken in and two Maoris and accused entered. The electric light was not working and accused lit a match and went to the scullery. He got a candle, which he lit. He came in with a knife and the candle and said: “Ton are the I am after. I will settle you.” He made a slash at him, said witness, and tney returned to the scullery with tnreequarters of a bottle of methylated, and -threw that over him and set fire to it. ' 7. • '
