PRICE FOR TOBACCO CROP.
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, May 4. The Tobacco Board has recommended to the Government that the average prices to be paid by all manufacturers lor the 1939-40 crop should be on the basis of Is IOJd a lb for flue-cured leaf and Is 71d for air-dried. Hon. D. G. Sullivan states that these prices are the same as those arranged by the Government for the previous season. Last year they operated by arrangement with the manufacturers without actually being fixed by regulations. Certain difficulties arose on this account during the season, and in order to avoid these the board had considered it advisable that the prices should definitely be fixed by regulations. The recommendation was receiving the consideration of the Government. In connection with the-average price, the board is also of the opinion that any difference between the preliminary cash payments and the final payments should lie paid to each grower ou a flat poundage basis. The board has fixed the date by which the payments for the 1939-40 crop are to be completed as not later than. October 20.
