MANAWATU SEASON OPENS. SEVERAL SURPRISE RESULTS. AVitli all the teams changed in personnel owing to war conditions and other circumstances, uncertainty hung over the outcome ot Saturday’s Rugby matches, the first of this season under the control of the Manawatu Rugby Union, and there were several surprises. University, last season’s champions, defeated Air Force, the new team in the competitions. Feilding accounted for Old Boys and United beat St. Patrick’s. The only result fulfilling general expectations was the success of Kia Toa over Feilding Old Boys, but this was attained only through the ' kicking ability of one player. Though heavy rain fell in the early morning, the ground conditions were excellent. Sunlight during the • early part of the afternoon and the absence of wind made the occasion even more enjoyable and there was a, good attendance at the Showgrounds for the first day of the season.
