Now Zealand and Australia have continued their efforts to secure'' increased shipping facilities, New Zealand particularly boing interested in securing ships for apples. The butter position is becoming worse from the producers’ standpoint. Tradcjrs now estimate that United Kingdom consumption is little more than four ounces a head, which is half the permitted ration. A highly-placed official, in denying the suggestion that Now Zealand and Australian producers were unfairly treated, claimed that it should be remembered that New Zealand and Australia already received a substantial preference. It would not appear that the quantity of New Zealand butter exported to the United Kingdom could be increased even if the retail price was lowered. The official promised to investigate the question cf Ihe publicity at present given margarine. It was pointed out that New Zealand and Australian butter bad not only lost its identity, but all propaganda encouraging the consumption of butter cekscd on the outbreak of war. On the other band margarino producers were advertising heavily, also the 1’.11.C. periodically gives talks emphasising the food value of margarine.
