Eraser, in a speech, said: “It is essential that Britain be quicker off the mark. Oil both the civilian side and the service side these are disappointing times but the Navy is not downhearted and never will be downhearted.” “The Navy at least is sure that the Germans, whenever they encounter something like equality in strength, will not face it,” he added. “The Renown’s captain told me the Seharnhorst fled immediately the Renown opened fire. The AVarspite’s captain said the German ’planes would not approach when the anti-aircraft guns were in action.”
